Pharma Production Planning

Pharmaceutical production planning, batch by batch

Turn the demand plan into production orders. PLAIO sizes each one to its lane, checks the components and shows each line's load by month.

The lane sets the order size

A 2,000-tube minimum and 1,000-tube increments on a one-month lead time. Every order suggestion on this lane follows them.

Planning parameters for Hydrocortisone Cream 30g at the Production Center: 18 months shelf life, a one-month lead time, a minimum order of 2,000 tubes and an incremental order quantity of 1,000

Production orders your lines can run

PLAIO checks the batch size, the components and the line load before an order reaches the floor. The planner fixes a problem in the plan, not on the shop floor on Tuesday.

Orders sized to the batch you make

Each production lane carries a minimum order and an order increment, and PLAIO flags any that are not a multiple of the batch size. Order suggestions follow them, inside the lane's lead time and frozen period.

The lead time includes quality release, so a batch is planned to be sellable when the market needs it.

Why it matters:

Nobody rounds a suggestion by hand before it goes to the ERP.

Hydrocortisone Cream 30g in July 2027: the production lane has a 2,000-tube minimum order and a 1,000-tube increment. Demand of 8,000 less 1,500 opening stock leaves 6,500 needed, and PLAIO suggests an order of 7,000, rounded up to the next 1,000.

What changes for your planners

PLAIO Supply Planner rows for the three components of Tablet 100mg with their lead times: Active Ingredient A, ringed, at 3 months, Excipient Blend at 2 months and the Tablet Packaging Kit at 1 month

Components planned with the batch

Production lanes explode the bill of materials, so every order brings its component demand into the plan. Each component is planned on its own supplier lead time: three months for the API, one for the packaging.

PLAIO Expiry Projection chart with October 2027 ringed: a quantity of 169,200 expires unsold that month, with an unsellable cost of 2,610,781

Shelf life in every order

Set shelf life and minimum remaining shelf life per product and location. PLAIO flags stock that will expire unsold and supply that outlives its demand.

PLAIO Capacity Plan for September 2027, with the Production Center rows shaded as near capacity: Granulation Line 1 at 87%, ringed, and Granulation Line 2 at 20%

Line load by month

The Capacity Plan counts firm orders and order suggestions on each line, month by month. A line above 85% is marked near capacity while you can still move volume.

From demand plan to the shop floor

PLAIO network of suppliers feeding the plant over purchase lanes, with one lane's rules open: Sterile Water for Injection, 4-month lead time, MOQ 100, increments of 50.

Demand

Supply planning runs against your demand plan, by product, location and month. A change in demand reaches the next supply run.

Production plan

PLAIO nets demand against stock, open orders and safety stock, then suggests production orders sized to each lane. Each order brings its component demand with it.

Capacity and schedule

The Capacity Plan loads those orders onto each line by month. The shop-floor schedule then places them job by job, around changeovers, cleaning, shifts and downtime.

Pharmaceutical production planning FAQ

It decides what to make, how much and when, so each market gets product with enough shelf life left. In pharma that means whole batches, components on hand, quality release time and lines that have room.

Yes. Each product has a batch size, and each production lane has a minimum order and an increment. PLAIO flags lane settings that are not a multiple of the batch, and orders that do not match it.

Yes. Production lanes explode the bill of materials into component demand, drawn first-expiry-first-out. On the schedule, a job whose materials are not ready gets a Material Not Ready exception.

Each product has a shelf life and a minimum remaining shelf life, which you can override per location. Expired batches are skipped, and stock at risk shows on the Inventory & Expiry dashboard.

No. PLAIO plans on top of your ERP, which stays the system of record. Approved order suggestions are available to your ERP through PLAIO's API.
