PLAIO vs o9 Solutions

The o9 alternative built for pharma planning teams

o9 describes its typical customer as a multinational with multi-billion-dollar revenue, and says it is not usually positioned for smaller or single-site companies1. PLAIO is for pharma manufacturers and CMOs. Shelf life, CMO order rules and line changeovers are in the plan from the first cycle, and your own planners run the setup.

Why pharma teams pick PLAIO over o9

Topic PLAIO o9 Digital Brain
Built for pharma
Made for mid-market pharma ✓Yes. Pharma manufacturers, CMOs and CDMOs, with smaller planning teams in mind✕Aimed at multi-billion-dollar multinationals. Not typically positioned for small or single-site companies1
Shelf life and expiry ✓In supply planning itself: batch-by-batch FEFO, minimum remaining shelf life per item and location18–Handled in MEIO, which o9 lists as a separate solution1,6
CMO order rules ✓Every CMO lane carries its own lead time, MOQ, order increment and maximum. Orders are rounded to fit17–Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier capacities and lead times3. CMO planning data was built during its biosimilar project7
Changeovers and cleaning ✓Sequence-dependent changeovers, cleaning times, minimum and maximum waits, shifts and downtime, out of the box19–Not mentioned on its scheduling page. Pre-built industry templates, customisable per customer4
Industry focus ✓Pharma only, with batches, shelf life and CMOs in the core model17–One platform for 30-plus industries. Pharma & Biotech is a segment of Life Sciences1,2
Planning engine
Demand, supply and production in one flow ✓One workflow. Production orders come straight from the agreed supply plan19–Connected, but sold as separate solutions. Price scales with how many you deploy1
Scheduling alternatives ✓The optimizer saves up to three alternatives as draft scenarios. Nothing reaches the floor until published19,23✓A sandbox for standard scenarios such as throughput maximisation or overtime minimisation4
A supply plan you can trace ✓Deterministic: the same inputs give the same orders, and each order traces to its requirement23✓A solver suite to configure: heuristics, linear and mixed-integer programming or third-party solvers3,15
Forecasting ✓ML forecast per item and location, with accuracy and bias tracked at the lag you choose24✓Model tournaments, ensembles and drivers such as price, promotions and weather5
Rollout and running it
Planners run the setup ✓Planners upload their own spreadsheets and map the columns. IT only grants access20Not published. Delivery is o9-led, partner-led or hybrid, with configurators trained by o9 Academy1,11
Planning before the ERP link ✓Yes. The first plan runs on the files you have, one module and one scope at a time20–o9’s own APO guide puts a typical enterprise migration at 12 to 24 months, selection to global rollout13
ERP integration ✓Built by the PLAIO team: AI drafts the mapping, a consultant checks it. No technical skills needed on your side21–Open APIs9. o9’s integration course expects Python and PySpark12
Who you work with ✓The PLAIO team, from first upload to ERP link21–o9, a partner or both. Accenture led about 30 o9 implementations in 20241,10
Plan audit trail ✓Every edit kept with person, time, old and new value and an optional comment22Not published. Its security page lists ISO 27001, SOC 1 and SOC 2 certifications14

Where PLAIO saves a pharma team time

Five places where pharma plans usually break, and what each product asks of your team.

Shelf life, batches and expiry

PLAIO

Shelf life is part of the supply plan, not a module on the side. PLAIO plans stock batch by batch and allocates first expiry, first out. Set a minimum remaining shelf life on the item, or per item and location, and PLAIO works out the day each batch stops being sellable there. A batch that will be too short-dated when it is needed does not count against that demand, so the plan orders or moves the stock you actually need. The Inventory & Expiry dashboard shows unsellable quantity and its cost months ahead17,18.

o9 Digital Brain

At o9, shelf life lives in MEIO, its multi-echelon inventory product. MEIO weighs shelf life, freshness and aging risk when it sets stock levels and confirms orders6. MEIO is listed as its own solution, and o9 scopes pricing by the number of solutions deployed1. So expiry-aware stock planning is one more solution to scope next to supply planning. Ask o9 to show it on your minimum-shelf-life rules per market.

Capsule 25mg batches in the Nordic warehouse with expiry, months to expiry and sellable-until dates, and the Inventory & Expiry projection listing batch C25-2505-N: 515 boxes unsellable from Nov 2026, cost 2,781

Contract manufacturing

PLAIO

In PLAIO a CMO is a supply lane with its own lead time, MOQ, order increment and maximum order size. Planned orders are rounded to fit: a requirement of 1,130 with an MOQ of 1,000 and steps of 200 becomes 1,200. A planner approves each suggestion before the ERP picks it up. If a CMO’s line needs scheduling, it can sit as its own shop floor next to your plants17,18,19.

o9 Digital Brain

o9 models Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier capacities and lead times3, and its own article on biopharma names reliance on CDMOs as a main source of complexity16. Its biosimilar case shows what that meant in practice: the ERP held CMO financials only, and o9 had to build the BOM and planning-item data during the project before master planning could run7. That is project time PLAIO’s CMO lanes are designed to skip.

Supplier constraints on the CMO lane for Capsule 25mg (3-month lead time, minimum 1,000, increment 200, maximum 6,000) beside the order list, where the first three CMO orders are Approved and the rest are still Suggested

Forecasting and AI

PLAIO

PLAIO’s ML forecast is trained on your monthly sales per item and location. It picks up seasonality and trend and can start from an item’s first month of sales. In the Demand Builder you pick the base for each stretch of the horizon, say ML for six months and the commercial plan after that, then add tenders or launches as their own lines. Accuracy, error and bias are tracked at the lag you choose.23,24.

o9 Digital Brain

o9’s forecasting is broad. It runs model tournaments across statistical, ML and AI models, combines them in ensembles, brings in drivers such as pricing, promotions and weather, and measures Forecast Value Add5. Since March 2026 it also markets APEX, an operating model pairing large language models with symbolic AI1. That depth suits a consumer portfolio with promotions. A pharma team mostly needs a forecast it can explain at S&OP, with tenders and launches on top.

Demand Builder for Tablet 200mg in the Nordic warehouse: ML Forecast as the base from Oct 2026, the Commercial Plan from Apr 2027, a Q4 Tender overlay on Nov 2026 to Feb 2027, and forecast accuracy, error and bias for the product family at a 3-month lag

Production scheduling

PLAIO

PLAIO’s schedule starts from the supply plan, so it begins with the agreed quantities and dates. Each product follows its routing through your stages. Setup, run and cleaning times are set per line, changeovers depend on what ran before, and each step can have a minimum and maximum wait. Ask the optimizer for alternatives and it saves up to three as scenarios, trading late orders against changeover time. Nothing reaches the floor until someone publishes it19,23.

o9 Digital Brain

The o9 scheduler is drag and drop. It weighs material, labour, equipment and business rules together and supports intra-day replanning4. Its page does not mention changeovers or cleaning. o9 offers pre-built industry templates that stay fully customizable4, so fitting them to pharma line rules is part of your implementation project.

The optimizer’s Balanced alternative open as a draft production schedule, with jobs on dispensing, granulation and blending lines, a Draft badge and a Publish button

Rollout and who runs it

PLAIO

With PLAIO your planners upload the files they already keep and map the columns themselves. The mapping is reused next time. Demand, supply and production come in one module at a time, and the first plan does not wait for the ERP link. When IT is ready, the PLAIO team builds the connection: AI drafts the mapping and a consultant checks it. Nobody on your side needs technical skills for that20,21.

o9 Digital Brain

o9 delivers through o9-led, partner-led or hybrid implementations1. Accenture led about 30 o9 implementations in 202410. o9 Academy trains configurators on its supply planning reference product and solver11, and its integration course expects Python and PySpark12. In its 2026 APO guide, o9 puts a typical enterprise planning migration at 12 to 24 months13. At an o9 event, Mankind Pharma said its results came 4 to 5 months after launch, after a year and a half of work8.

Which one fits a pharma planning team

Why pharma teams choose PLAIO over o9

  • Shelf life, CMO order rules and line changeovers are in the product, so they are not a configuration project.
  • Your planners run the setup from the spreadsheets they already keep. No integrator, no Python.
  • The first plan runs before the ERP link exists, one module and one scope at a time.
  • Demand, supply and production sit in one workflow, and a planner approves every order before it goes to the ERP.
  • Every edit is logged with person, time, old and new value, ready for an auditor or a variance review.

o9 may suit you if…

  • You are a multi-billion-dollar multinational planning several industries and several ERPs on one platform.
  • You want revenue growth, merchandise and ESG planning from the same vendor as your supply chain.
  • You have budgeted for the 12 to 24 months o9 gives for a typical enterprise migration13.

Switching from o9, or choosing between them

For a pharma planning team, it covers the part that matters day to day: demand, supply and production planning, with shelf life, CMO lanes and line rules already in the data model. o9 also sells revenue growth, merchandise and ESG planning across 30-plus industries. If you do not need those, you would be paying and implementing for them anyway.

Yes. PLAIO takes data through uploads or its Integration API, keyed on your own item and location codes, and approved orders go back to the ERP. Some teams start with one module, such as production scheduling for one site, while another tool keeps planning the rest. Once the team trusts it, they widen the scope.

No. The ERP stays the system of record for items, stock, open orders and execution. Our customers run SAP (ECC and S/4HANA), NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and PLAIO also works with Oracle. One customer plans in PLAIO against SAP ECC while it moves to S/4HANA, and the feeds switch over when S/4HANA goes live.

Master data first: items, locations and bills of materials. Then inventory, and forecasts or sales orders. Supply and production policies follow when those modules start. A first plan needs far less than the full set, and any dataset can come from a spreadsheet while we build the ERP connection.

It depends mostly on how many modules, datasets and sites you bring in at the start, which is why we begin with one module and one planning scope. The first plan does not wait for the ERP integration. Compare that with the 12 to 24 months o9’s own guide gives for an enterprise migration.
